My Introduction to Streetart in Johannesburg

I can’t remember my first introduction to art, but it is definitely one of my first memories. I remember my first art books at age five and the many, many hours I spent with them. Since then, art in it’s many forms has always been a part of my life.
Fast forward to present day, the crayons and art-books have been replaced with touchscreens & laptops, yes, I do like my gadgets. I now live in Johannesburg and the only thing that’s really changed is the nature of the art that surrounds me. In February I took a walk around Newtown & this was my first real introduction to the amazing depth and variety of street art here.

Down this corridor are works by graffiti artists mak1, Kevin Love, Rasty Knayles and Myza 420.

Sculptors, installations, graffiti, portraits, poetry, fantasy and more, you name it you will find it on these streets. In over 16 years of travelling through and living in South Africa, Johannesburg was my least favourite place. Now, thanks to a newly restored love for street-art and photography, courtesy of Instagram, maybe not so much. Actually, I might even like this place.
Since February I have taken many more walks around the city and I discover new inspiration almost every day. In this spirit I created an I nstagram page yesterday “StreetArtJoburg” to showcase some of my favourite works. I’m far from an expert but I do know what I like so if you share my sentiments then follow the new page and share your own interpretations of the art that makes the streets of Johannesburg unique.
